OurHistory

How we got started.

"And the Lord said unto Moses write this for a memorial in a book and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua" Exodus 17:14a

High on top of a hill on Macedonia Road, overlooking the Ohio River and the beautiful hills of West Virginia, located in Lawrence County, Fayette Township, Ohio beside a dirt road, God laid a foundation; and Macedonia Baptist Church was built. This church is what we call “THE MOTHER CHURCH.”  It still stands, withered, with its red roof and white siding, surrounded by majestic acorn trees, which are over one hundred years old.

During the past century, Macedonia Baptist Church was the only Negro church in the tri-state area.  Most of the people of Burlington were members of this church.  They enjoyed a harmonious fellowship, but the distance to travel to the church presented quite a hardship for those traveling from Burlington, especially in bad weather, with the only mode of travel was that of walking or horse and buggy.

In the year of 1887, at a business meeting, it was resolved to “STRIKE AN ARM” in Burlington, and it was submitted by resolution, to grant letters of transfer to those desiring them, to form a church in Burlington and this was the beginning of THE FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF BURLINGTON.
